Yeast Starter - too much spraymalt?

Post by Will808 » Thu Apr 21, 2011 4:46 pm

Hi all,

On my last brew I saved some wort and used it to split a WYeast 1469 smack pack. I used one of the batches to create a stater last night but instead of 40g spraymalt in the 300ml starter (as per Horden Hillbilly's guide), I messed up and used more like 100 - 120g.

The starter is fermenting fantastically, but I'm wondering if the amount of spraymalt might add an unwelcome flavour to the next brew. If so, is there anything I can do, or should I make up another starter?

Thanks for any advice.

Err, yes your gravity would be >1.100, which is far far to strong for a starter. I would boil some water and dilute it straight away, before its been fermenting for too long or your yeast will be in less than optimal shape.

Thanks 196osh - probably a bit late to dilute, so I'll knock up another one.

As a guide you need x grammes of spraymalt in 10ml of starter - so 100g in 1L. This gives around 1.040.
