i have bought this stuff before from ebay but the shop i used before as gone. so i bought from another person on there seemed a good price. it arrived today the gypsum is like brown rough material and the calcium chloride is like snow flakes and it looks white with a hint of yellow in flakes?? any one ever bought these before?
i disagree in paying youngs home brew prices or any other prices for this stuff its very steep. the stuff i bought before this was BP food grade and worked ok. but this stuff i have doubts over. i will post a link now to show you were from

bought some gypsum and calcium chloride ?
Re: bought some gypsum and calcium chloride ?
Gypsum: Colorless to white; with impurities may be yellow, tan, blue, pink, brown, reddish brown or gray
Re: bought some gypsum and calcium chloride ?
If it's not pure how would you know how much to use?
i.e. is it 90% Calcium Sulphate? 75%
What are the impurities? Will they impart any taste? Are then poisonous? Could they kill me?
So in a word, given how cheap pure Gypsum is I personally wouldn't use the Gypsum

Hi Alfie
As its being sold in the Fertiliser/ Soil Improvement section, I'd be a bit suspect over using it.
Cheers Norm

As Norm says, if it's being sold as a soil improver, I wouldn't be too comfortable putting it in my beer.
The calcium chloride in the picture looks fairly normal, although it says minimum 77% in the description, so what's the other 23%?. I've never seen brown gypsum though.. It's probably contaminated with sand, which is fine for your garden but not so good for your beer because there's no way of knowing its composition.
Honestly, I would bin them both and buy from a reputable brewing supplier like Brupaks - at least then you know it's safe.
