Isinglass Finings
Isinglass Finings
I just got some Brupaks dried isinglass, I mixed 1 spoonfull into 500ml Cold water and used 250ml of this & poured into my beer 21litres which has been racked into secondary for 5 days already just to allow it to settle a bit on its own. Does anyone know how long i should let it sit with the isinglass just being added yesterday? I have the beer sitiing at about 13-14oC, has anoyone had any experience with isinglass?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Isinglass Finings
no need to be sarky...
never used brewpaks finings i suspect its cryofine, if so its 100g into 33 pints of water to make the normal isinglas. youd normally use around 500ml-560ml per 42l....and over fining is worse than not fining at all.... itd be star bright in 24-48 hrs if you got the rates right

Re: Isinglass Finings
Hi lyonsy81
If your beer doesn't settle as fast as you hoped it may be because dried isinglass isn't the easiest thing to get into solution. It can take a lot of work!
My preferred stuff is the Brupaks isinglass paste. There's a thread here explaining how I use it.
Hope this helps.
As an aside, why is overfining worse than not fining at all, Mr Critch?

Re: Isinglass Finings
I've heard that beer doesn't last long once isinglass is added! Is there any truth in this.
And is it any good fining with it prior to bottling?
Cheers.

In my case it doesn't last long once it's in the barrel!gnutz2 wrote:I've heard that beer doesn't last long once isinglass is added! Is there any truth in this.

if you dont rack it off the fish guts itll go off within 6-8 weeks

dont use isinglas prior to bottling there no point!
Re: Isinglass Finings
Thanks, but why is there no point, I use gelatine then rack off into a sugar solution (batch prime) and then bottle.critch wrote:gnutz2 wrote:I've heard that beer doesn't last long once isinglass is added! Is there any truth in this.

Why not do this with isinglas?
Cheers Baz.
Re: Isinglass Finings
theres no point cos itll settle out by itself without it and the fining will drag loads of yeast out possibly to the point where itll be harder to carbonate
ive never fined a bottle (apart from protofloc in the copper) in 25 years. i do 1200 bottles a week minimum and our only problem has been the occasional overcarbed bottle due to improper storage(currently being addressed)
in fact id go as far as to say id rather not fine at all as it strips out flavour from the beer, but unfortunately most publicans do not understand beer and wont stand for an extra day or so wait before dispense hence the rise of bright beer and the laughable"fast cask system"

Re: Isinglass Finings
Cheers for the answers boys but the correct answer is 48 hours, take note if you's do decide to use isinglass finings!

Re: Isinglass Finings
absolutely no expert here, but will share my experience.
I use AllkleerA and Cellarbrite from Murphy's, one is aux finings the other isinglass - ready mixed in solution.
I add them both to the primary FV, (about a day a part) and then cask and/or bottle. I rack off the guts into bottling tanks.
So far (touch wood) no problems with off guts or under carb'd beer in bottles.
I dont think these finings last too long. I think its 6 weeks refrigerated. So I tend to order per brew and not stock pile it.
IIRC, 250ml of each does my 18 gallons just fine (no pun)

Re: Isinglass Finings
So you can still get a decent secondary fermentation after using isinglass?
