What should it smell like?

Post by jodami84 » Thu Feb 02, 2012 3:29 pm

Possible i'm being over cautious cause i ruined a beer recently by keeping the temp way too warm, but i'm worried about the smell of my wort after its been in the FV for about 5 days. Its meant to be a TT Landlord close, but It doesn't smell like anything ive made before beer wise, certainly none of the kits, and it smells quite a bit stronger. Is this the norm for an AG brew, and is it just cause it's a different style and yeast than im used to?

Aplogies for what may seem like a daft question, but i keep reading about peoples beer smelling and tasting really sweet even at the time of fermenting, but i wouldnt fancy tasting this at all!

Is it eggy? This is a common smell during a healthy fermentation.

You can have a hydrogen sulphide smell without concern but that hasn't been overly common for me.
After five days, I would expect primary fermentation to be complete with the yeast cleaning up, but what you see and smell will vary dependent upon yeast strain.
If there is a problem there will be nothing you can do, so bang on the lid, it will most probably be fine.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

Fermentation can chuck out some horrible smells at times and wonderful ones at others.. Never trust your nose, give it a taste!

I will leave it be. Left the brewbelt off this one after what happened to the last one so i no it isnt that. Will have to just leave it be and see what happens. Will be looking to keg it this Sun all being well.

Indeed, a quick inspection of my latest brews after 2 days....

Wy1098 - may have been marginally underpitched - eggy smell
Woodforde's - slightly overpithed perhaps - fruity smell.

Does get you worried but its probably ok
