Hi.
I am planning a double brew day. One brew a low alcohol for the wife, the second an ipa.
I wonder if i can add the grain from the low alcohol brew to the ipa mash after i am finished with it so as to bump the og a little. I trust the malt will still have some sugar in it.
Is this doable or am i asking for trouble?
mashing malt twice?
Re: mashing malt twice?
Why don't you use all the grain and party gyle? The first runnings give the stronger beer, and the second a weaker beer. This is how fullers do their esb and London pride. Leedsbrew did this recently so check his posts

Re: mashing malt twice?
Yes i know but previous experience has been really bad.
I guess the other way of doing it is to do a full volume mash on the first one( its only a 12 litre brew) then sparge the rest again before adding the second mash contents?

I think it's only worthwhile if you are rubbish at sparging!
In other words, if you are getting a decent mash efficiency then there won't be much in the way of extra sugars to extract.

And you'll risk oversparging which, from experience, I know will allow loads of awful flavours to carry into the second ale.

This is not how Fuller's party-gyle. It's more complicated than that. They blend several worts post-boil to get the right gravity for each beer before fermentation.Goulders wrote:Why don't you use all the grain and party gyle? Re: mashing malt twice?
What about simply making one brew and adding some more water to the one you want weaker? I guess this could even be done after fermentation. I guess it depends if your happy to dilute hop flavour too.
