Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
Hi all,
I would like mashing liquor without the chlorine taint, is there a quicker way than boiling it up and letting it cool?
Cheers.

Add half a Campden tablet, crushed, and stir.
Cheers

Not sure that chloramine can be boiled off either so I second the campden tab approach.
Re: Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
I always boil and add a campden tablet, just to make sure.

Boiling does provide other benefits like dropping residual alkalinity in the water so can be beneficial anyway, although you can do the same quicker using CRS.
Re: Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
I also boil for 30 mins, and add a Campden tab. What is CRS?

Could someone tell me what is happening chemically when you add a campden?
Are you replacing chlorine with something else or does the tablet and the chlorine react to a gas etc.
Not keen on adding chemicals to my brew but have very chloriney water.
Thanks,
Dean.

Re: Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
Is there any difference or benefit in using Sodium Met instead of campden tablets?
I think there is less crapola added to Sodium Met if it does the same thing in terms of chlorine reduction?
How long do you have to boil the water for to remove chlorine? If your heating strike water to 70c-80c anyway its not too much further I suppose.
Dean.

Re: Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
My Campden powder is Sodium met. It can also be Potassium met so chemically only thing that will change is the resulting salt which shouldn't make a difference given the amounts involved.
Re: Quick method of dechlorinating tap water?
Boiling will not remove chloramines so you need to check if your water board uses it. Some do as it is more stable so will continue to chlorinate the water supply outside of peak use when the levels of chlorine might diminish. The best way of getting rid is campden tabs then.dean_wales wrote:Is there any difference or benefit in using Sodium Met instead of campden tablets?

The water you use is full of loads of minerals and compounds anyway so adding a very small amount in the form of Sodium Met isn't going to make a huge difference. If you use CRS treatment then you buffer alkalinity but you end up increasing Sulphate and Chlorides by a huge amount. There are still benefits to doing this though. I think the same is true of adding some Sodium Met to remove the chlorine.
