first brew

Post by jonfro » Thu Apr 26, 2012 8:05 pm

Hi have just bottled my 1st all grain brew, a spitfire clone. I have put 2 gallons into my old 'Beer machine', with priming sugar. Do you think this will be OK. I hope so
as it will be a use for it, now I have moved onto the real thing.

PS although a bit cloudy, tasted bloody good, not far off the real thing. :D

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread...
What was your recipe? I've just bottled one from the Hop and Grain recipe and its not quite...it. Wondered what you did so I can modify and get closer to nailing this clone!

Fermenting -
Conditioning - Meads - Raspberry Melomel yeast test, Vanilla Cinnamon Metheglyn, Orange Melomel.
Drinking - Youngs AAA Kit; Leatherwood Traditional Mead, Cyser, Ginger Metheglyn.
Planning - Some kits until I can get back to AG, then a hoppy porter, Jim's ESB, some American Red.

I assume you've seen the one listed on the Recipe forum here, Norm's recipes produced using the Real Ale Almanac and Beer Smith software? I'll repost it here just in case:

Thanks, but that was the one I meant :(
Its most of the way there but didn't quite nail it. Thinking of getting hold of some Shep's yeast and seeing if that helps!

I bet this beer is one that would benefit from stealing the first runnings and boiling it separately to condense it down all syrupy and caramelly, then adding it back into the main wort boil. If you were missing some toffee-essence, this would be a good technique.

What is "Shep's yeast"?

That's an idea, may give that a bash failing all else. What I meant was some of Shepherd Neame's own yeast, as their beers have a character that many think comes down to the yeast they use. I'll either harvest from a bottle of 1698, or be lazy and ask brewlab to send me one :D
