fining

Post by paulg » Thu Apr 26, 2012 8:54 pm

I have never used finings I wait for the beer to clear during the conditioning period
I want to continue to secondary ferment in my cornies when I get them but am wondering what effect the addition of fining would have on how long beer will keep un opened in a cornie keg
and is it necessary to use it any advantages etc

1st of all why ferment in the cornie? To me that's missing the whole point of having a cornie.

The dip tube will suck up and sludge from the fermentation unless you cut an inch or so off it.. I've found that even if you plan to let the sludge settle and pull it off on the 1st pint that enough remains to cause a cloud if you move the keg.

Are you thinking of adding the finings with the sugar? If your going to secondary ferment then open the keg to fine it then you'll loose some of the gas from the process (plus you'd need to stir in the finings). If you add both together i don't think the finings will catch enough before they fall to the bottom.

I clear my beer 1st then add to the cornie. Then force gas it ;)

+1!

if i had cornies thats what id do, if you leave beer on finings you dramatically shorten its lifespan

ok thanks for that critch I will let it clear naturally
I want to secondary ferment as I have always done so ,the cornies are because I got fed up with king keg problems (tap leaking ,not sealing etc)
I would use proper casks but they wont fit in my fridge
