New to this so a bit confusing. Just trying to work out what is good or bad on my new brupaks mash tun.
Want a 23 litre 1040 beer.
I would mash and want to get 1035 gravity wort as a target and 27 litres in total into the boiler to allow for evaporation and losses to trub and yeast.
So, what is good or bad efficiency in these made up situations;
get 22 litres of 1040 into boiler so less liquid of a higher gravity
get 30 litres of 1035 into boiler so more liquid of lower gravity

22 * 1.040 = 22.88 so that volume contains 0.88Kg more than the equivalent water
30 * 1.035 = 31.05, 1.05Kg more.
If these were real situations on the same mass of grains and had been arrived at by different milling, mashing & sparging techniques then the 30L would be the more efficient one.

Efficiency is about how much sugar you get from the grain. The volume of wort is a side issue.
In other words, getting a gravity of 1.040 from 4Kg of pale malt in a final vloume of 23 litres would give you an efficiency of 76%. Getting a gravity of 1.031 from the same quantity of malt in a final volume of 30 litres would also give you an efficiency of 76%. It may seem odd, but that's how it works!
So, to work out your efficiency you'll have to be clear about how much malt you'll be using, and of what sort of malt, ie, pale, crystal, black etc.

A lot of factors go in to it. I've been using my grain mill at factory setting since day one. I read on a different forum that a finer crush gets a higher O G so, as the poster suggested I double milled the next batch. The normally expected 1.052 ended up at 1.061, an over 17% improvement. I'm going to do that again on my next batch and see, if I get a higher O G than expected I'll dig out my mill manuel and adjust the gap.
