Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
Hi All,
My friend and I are about to place our 1st Malt & Hop order for our upcoming move to the Dark Side with AG.
We have decided to put a large order in so we can benefit from cheaper bulk prices and have our ingredients on hand because we want to do a lot of early brewing so we get a good rolling stock of bottled conditioned Beer ready to Sup.
The beers we like best are lighter in colour and have a good Hop profile. The Beers we would like to mirror are Golden Ales and IPA's both of which are quite hoppy with an ABV on the higher side. Listed below is the ingredients we intend to order. Will these ingredients enable us to produce Beers of the type we like?
25KG Thomas Fawcett Maris Otter Pale Malt
1KG Torrefied Wheat (we both like our beer to have a good head)
2KG Caramalt
1KG Crystal Malt
100 grammes each of :
Fuggles
WGV
Northdown
Challenger
Nottingham Ale Yeast.

Re: Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
Theres a few recipes that use all that sort of stuff so i dare so you'll be right but i'd wait until one of the experienced AG guys has a look, though if i may off a slight suggestion?
Unless you're doing big batches, make sure you have enough of your other malts to use up that entire 25kg bag without having to buy more, just to save on delivery if your buying online or messing about if your going to collect it yourself. Just a thought

All good basic ingredients but if it's a more highly hopped beer you want you might think of American hops like Citra or New Zealand ones like Nelson sauvin.
Re: Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
I would buy more crystal malt. It's suprising how much you can use. If you like a head on your beer and for it to stay there, buy torrified wheat.
Add some goldings onto the hop list and maybe some target for bittering as this hop is decent value due to its high alpha acid content.

Dennis has good point. Though not to everybodies taste, if you like hoppy brews then using Oz, US and NZ hops could be better value. While some of them cost more per 100g, generally you can use less of them to the same effect as UK hops. Plus their different flavour profiles might be more to your taste. They are to mine.
Something worth thinking about.

I buy from The Malt Miller

I would also buy a more varied selection of hops. Can you name some commercial IPAs you like?

Re: Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
If you like high IBU beers and want a hoppy aroma then the amount of hops can easily exceed 100g per brew so I would look to buy more than this. It might be a bit early for you but getting hold of a vac packer is a great way to buy hops in bulk and then split them down into brew size portions. You can then freeze and use as needed. Buying in bulk can certainly reduce the cost of hops which are becoming a major cost component after liquid yeast.

Re: Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
had some good hop results late hopping with crystal. styrian celia . and hallateur hersthingy.i like good hoppy ales and so far have had best results 70-80% late hopping.but as some of the guys say it can take up more than 100gr of hops for a23ltr brew. just bagged up for a 100% galaxy brew which i tried in the pub a few weeks ago ,it was amazin. good luck with the move to the dark side

Re: Are we ordering the correct Malt & Hops
As an Oz brewer I can highly recommend a Euro Hop,
Aurora - it gives a lovely intense hoppy aroma reminiscent of Styrian Goldings on steroids, as well as decent bittering at around 9% ABV. I use it as the finishing hop in the likes of TTL and it goes well in almost all pale ales and even lagers.

Yes on the goldings and target. Pioneer also has a higher AA% with good aroma properties.Scotty Mc wrote:Add some goldings onto the hop list and maybe some target for bittering as this hop is decent value due to its high alpha acid content.
I'm just here for the beer.

If you like the hops used in Jaipur you won't go far wrong with bucket loads of Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial and Chinook.fatbelly wrote:Jaipur & Castle Rock Harvest Pale spring to mind

Yep good advice, and if that's the type of pale beer you like don't stock up on caramel/crystal malts.soupdragon wrote:If you like the hops used in Jaipur you won't go far wrong with bucket loads of Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial and Chinook.fatbelly wrote:Jaipur & Castle Rock Harvest Pale spring to mind![]()

Thanks for the reply Scooby. Does Caramalt not give a light / golden coloured beer?Scooby wrote:

Should I not be using say upto 10% for Caramalt to ensure Body etc?
I am asking because I really don't know
