Brewing a Pilsner type lager
Brewing a Pilsner type lager
Being an ale brewer. I want to have a go at brewing a Pilsner type Lager.
I understand from reading variouse reports, that brewing Larger is very different from brewing Ale.
So is there a thread or post on here that will give me a step-by-step instruction.
Or is there someone out there willing to take the time to guide me through it?
I do have a tempreture controlled fridge, so the right tmeprture is not a problem. But how do I set about it ?
cheers

Re: Brewing a Pilsner type lager
the basic differences between laer and ale are: 2x yeast, 2x fermentation time, 0.5x ferment temperature, cold store as long as you can.
Re: Brewing a Pilsner type lager
You could try reading this http://www.howtobrew.com/section1/chapter10.html , I dont think its a diffinative step by step guide and from the more i learn (which is still very limited) i would say dont stick to it word for word.
Its where i started and he does do quite a good job of explaining most things.
As i write this im just bottling my first lager, the recipe of which is his Oktoberfest recipe from the very same site. Looking back i wouldnt suggest it for a first lager but hey ho. It doesnt taste too bad, still a slight bitterness which has mellowed a lot as it was really pronounced before secondary fermentation, im hoping conditioning should finish the job, doesnt seem a bad lager though but its not what im striving for which is something lighter crisper and cleaner.

Much obliged Froggit.
I am not a Larger drinker but I said I would have a go at some for the Son-in-Law. Hope he appreciates it.
I will study the written work and give it a go.
I will post the results on here so others can see how much of an idiot I am.
thanks again froggit.

Re: Brewing a Pilsner type lager
I have done a few simple lagers such as a clone for BUD (for SWMBO) with some success. However at the start of the year I bought a sack of pilsner malt and attempted various more complicated beers including a straight pilsner. I have managed a couple of drinkable beers, but I have also thrown away three others.
On reflection I think a one of my many problems was not being a regular lager brewer. I did not have the process nailed down. Also I think pilsner malt has unexpected characteristics that I need to research better.
My advice is to stick to lager malt out the gate and do some light lagers

I second that, what recipe did you use for 'Bud' clone. the son-in-law likes that stuff
Re: Brewing a Pilsner type lager
From Dave Lines book "Brewing Beers Like those You Buy"
For 25L
Lager Malt 3500g
Flaked Rice 800g
Hallertau 60g @ 90mins
Obviously Irish Moss & Finnings as usual
