Wastage

Guys, I brewed up a 55l batch a couple of weeks ago. I racked into a secondary last week and lost 2-3l due to trub. I was bottling it today and lost 3l to trub. That's a loss of 6l at best. But I only had 36l which I could bottle. Which makes me wonder, where is the missing 13l?? That's a lot to lose and this is not the first time it has happened.

I used about 9kg of malt to 55l of liquor and sparged with 13l.

Might be a daft question, but did you collect 55L of wort in the FV? If not, how much?

I lose slightly more than 1L per kg of grain in the mash, .5l to dead space, then 10% evap on a 60 min boil, 15% for 90. I boil with the lid off. I lose 1.5L in each 20L boiler and about 1L to the hops. Soon adds up.

I often find a similar thing when losing even whats in my FV during fermentation, but not 13l going missing. I put my remaining liquid loss down to the foam evaporating. If I lost 13L from 55L in the FV I'd be asking some pretty searching questions of my son!
