Batch Priming With Golden Syrup

Post by Uncle Joshua » Sun Sep 02, 2012 11:22 pm

I have three brews on that I'm kind of in a rush to bottle. I'm amazingly skint until payday and have no sugar, I do have loads of golden syrup. can I batch prime with that? how much should I add (23l) and can I bottle as soon as I add it?

Yes, you can prime with golden syrup. I've primed with treacle in the past which gave a wonderful taste to my beer. I've also used honey. Whilst I can't remember how much I used at the time, this post may help with your calculations -

A quick google suggests 126g for 19l so you would need about 153g

I love this graphic from John Palmer's How to Brew. Your syrup will be somewhat more or less fermentable than straight sugar, but in the same ballpark. I'd recommend printing this out, then draw your line, then make you necessary adjustments.

You can use any form of sugar to bottle condition, and as PieOPah said, it's a last chance to introduce some more flavor too. I often use syrup or dark brown sugar for the same reason.

tate and lyles golden syrup contains 76% fermentable sugars( i got this from a very well qualified source) so basicly up your priming amounts by 1/4
