Bottle Bombs
Bottle Bombs
Usually, when bottling 25l of beer, I add 100g sugar diluted in 250ml water, to the bottling bucket.
Yesterday I was bottling 17l of beer, and was intending on adding 70g sugar, but added 100g in error. Do you think I will have 'bottle bombs'? Was thinking of only giving the bottles a couple of days in the warm to minimise explosions.

Re: Bottle Bombs
I'll go for No... that's only 2.3 volumes of pressure. I've primed to 3.3ish and not have a problem(yet).
Re: Bottle Bombs
Should be fine mate, glass bottles are rather resilient. much more so than people think!
Re: Bottle Bombs
The others folks have already given you the answer but for reassurance sake I'll add my agreement. You need to use a completely stupid amount of sugar to end up with bottle bombs.
Re: Bottle Bombs
Thanks for the replies guys - all seems ok, like you said, and no explosions!!
On a positive note - 2nd fermentation happened really quick - only 2 days!

Recylced NB bottles have handled 9 volumes of CO2 before (the crown caps were DOMING!) and not failed ! interesting opening them tho......

Re: Bottle Bombs
Bottle bombs are much more likely to happen if you bottle before fermentation is complete.
I'm just here for the beer.
Re: Bottle Bombs
if you're slightly concerned then crack one open and see if it re-decorates the ceiling!
I bottle all my brews and have adopted practise of always using 1 x 500ml plastic bottle. Give it a squeeze each day to see how carbonation is getting along. If it sounds like cut crystal when you flick the side then its likely to be slightly gassy

Re: Bottle Bombs
I also do this. I squeezed all the excess air out bottling time. After only 2 days in the warm, the bottle had filled with C02 and was rock hard!booldawg wrote: I bottle all my brews and have adopted practise of always using 1 x 500ml plastic bottle.
