Staggered brew

Post by Underground Joe » Thu Nov 08, 2012 8:11 am

I want to get a brew on this weekend but I probably won't have time to do a complete brew in one hit, so I was wondering if there would any issues with doing the mash and storing it in a sealed fermenter over night and then boiling the next morning.

Non at all as it will be boiled. You will just use more gas/electric getting the wort up to boil.

You may be better off leaving the liquor on the grist and do an overnight mash, your efficiency could go up a few points.

Thanks Barney, in that case I think I'll store it in a fresh coolbox overnight so I can get straight on with the boil in the morning.

Hi mate

Youll be surprised how little heat it can loose. I brew in a bag and mash in a hop and grape 5g boiler. When wrapped in a thick blanket it is still late 40c the following morning. I usually put the mash on at around 8pm and start the boil at 7 the following morning. I get around 63% efficiency, which although i would like higher, for the volume i make the extra grain doesnt cost too much. I got two excellents at the National Homebrew Comp, overnight mashing so youll be fine. Hope that helps.

I often do the mash, sparge and boil in the evening. Cool naturally overnight and aerate and pitch the next morning. No problem at all. I've also read of brewers who mash and sparge in the evening and set the boiler to come on with a socket timer a couple of hours before getting up.

I'd probably split it so that the mash is on overnight but either method will work fine.
