Water to Grain Ratio

Post by eknowles » Tue Dec 04, 2012 12:07 pm

Is there a recommended value for water to grain ratio (metric) ie; a value for perfect mash thickness?? Am confused!! Best advice I've had is to add enough liquor so that a spoon can stand up in the mixed mash! Any more accurate info appreciated.

most reckon 2.5 litres per kg grain. That's the figure I use.
Best wishes

+1

I use this for the majority of brews, but I would say its not that critical.

When I do a stepped mash I go up from 2:1 to 2.5:1 to 3.5:1
I've also used 3.5:1 in the past to minimise head-space in my MT to increase thermal mass and reduce heat loss.

So if your doing a strong brew and 2.5:1 will be tight in your mash tun its not a problem reducing ratio a bit.

Thats great, thanks. I've got my grain ready and let mash commence tomorrow!
