Malt Analysis Sheet

Post by alwilson » Fri Feb 15, 2013 4:02 pm

Guys,

What's the difference on a malt analysis sheet between "Extract As Is" as Extract Dry"

Also on another sheet, I have two values LDK, one expressed MIAG 2, the other MIAG 7 - Is this crush size? If so, How do I know what my crush size is when ordering it precrushed?

Cheers
Alex

All pale malt contains some water. The quantity is determined by the loss in weight after drying the ground malt at 105C.

The extract is determined on the malt as is.

To get the dry basis the extract as is is divided by (100 - the % moisture) and multiplied by 100.

The dry basis figure allows correlation with other malts.

The miag mill is a disc mill. Not dissimilar to the grinding stones in a windmill. The figures 2 and 7 relate to the gap between the two discs and are basically millimetres divided by 10 so 2 = 0.2mm. Yes this is the crush size

The miag mill replaced the seck mill that used to be used for IoB analysis and the casella that used to be used for EBC congress analysis. The seck used a gap of 25 thousandths of an inch (0.64mm) and was a roll mill. Your malt is more likely to be ground at about 40 thousandths of an inch or 1mm so the 7 setting will be closer to the value you want.

Thanks WallyBrew!

So, I presume I use the As Is extract, over dry.

I shall now readjust my figures for miag 7.

Thanks again!
