Sheffield Hallam Thornbridge Brew

Post by Cozzyb » Tue Feb 19, 2013 3:41 pm

Hi all,

Just wanted to share a fun experience I got to take part in last week. On Thursday I spent the entire day at Thornbridge brewery, in the Hall brewery with brewer Ben Wood. This was part of a competition for Sheffield Hallam Brewing Society vs Sheffield University Brewing Society, we basically got to pick a style, pick a name and try the beer, and it will be casked for the first time at BeerX in Sheffield on March 14th (look for Karha - Sheffield Hallam's brew).

The day was very informative to a homebrewer, as I got to see how things are done in an older brewery such as the Hall, where most things are hand carried and lots of manual work, and then see the automated processes of the Riverside brewery, it certainly was hard work and gave a much bigger appreciation for what goes into a beer.

Some jobs we got to help with were, Mashing, cleaning the mash tun, casking beer, moving beer to conditioning tanks, cleaning out the boil kettle (this is honestly the most hot perfume sauna ever ha).
It was really great fun, and provided a lot of information on how Thornbridge make their beers which I can incorporate into my own brewing which is fab, as well as provide me the experience of being able to see a beer I helped design on tap at a beer festival.

I have a bunch of pictures i can post as well if people are interested.
