chilling and bulk priming

Post by far9410 » Wed Feb 27, 2013 5:53 pm

Hi, this may not be a problem, just wondered what you guys do

Ive made two follow on brews, the second using the yeast cake from the first.I have two fv's, one which i fit little bottler to ,as required. So after 14 days fermenting the first brew, i,m ready to brew the second, so I transfer to secondary fv, bulk prime for bottling then pitch second brew onto some of first yeast.I could really do with leaving brew one to chill and settle out a bit before bottling but now that ive bulk primed I'm not sure this is a good idea, if I leave it for a few days will it then be enough to carbonate the bottles?

If you chill it down right away as low as you can get, so the yeast becomes inactive, then i'm pretty sure youll get away with it.

Your priming sugar will start fermenting in the meantime, and the CO2 escaping. How much? Who knows? I'm sure it depends on the quantity and health of your remaining yeast, temperature, gravity, etc, but I guarantee you won't get as much carbonation as you originally calculated for. Yeah, you might "get away with it" but best practice would be to prime immediately before bottling.

Yes that's what I thought, but I don't like to keep messing around with it at this stage, so I guess a third fv may be the answer next time

Doh! 3 FV's won't cure the problem!,how thick am I? I need to work out a clinically clean way of adding priming sugar later to the fv

Sounds like someone needs to build himself a simple mango chutney bottling bucket. :)

Very soon, my man. Mine is almost finished. I got distracted building a very primitive yeast stir plate.

By the way, both projects are stupid easy and highly recommended to all homebrewers. I'll try to publish a thread for each.
