Not sure if this is a bit 'off the wall' as an idea for a mashtun but i recently acquired a couple of stainless steel hip flasks. They're bigger flasks than i've seen before maybe 16x10cm. If i drill a load of holes in it and attach some tubing to the spout and do all the usual coolbox modifications, do you think it would work?
I also think that due to the curved nature of the hip flasks and some tactically positioned holes, i might be able to conjure up some fly sparging.
What do we reckon?

Re: Another homemade mashtun thread..
Hi
I'm confused.
A mash tun holds the grain and liquor, at a temp for an extended period.
Now a hip flask, will be
1) To Small to hold grain for a brew
2) Won't hold the temp
Perhaps I a missing something?

If you drilled loads of holes they could work as a filter, but unless you have a very small MT they wouldn't drain the grain very evenly so I wouldn't fly sparge with one; in fact you may find the coverage is small enough to limit the runoff speed for batch sparging too. Possibly better for a hop-stopper... but perfect for whisky

Sorry mark. I wasnt clear, yes as the filter instead of copper piping..
Re: Another homemade mashtun thread..
Cheers kev. I'll probably scrap that idea then but worth asking. I'll stick to the tried and tested copper piping method.

Hi
Personally though copper is easier to drill than stainless. Also, If you want to make it cheaply, just put a muslin hop filer over some plastic tubing.
Ahh, now that makes sense.Sorry mark. I wasnt clear, yes as the filter instead of copper piping..
