Using Yeast Slurry

Post by alwilson » Wed Mar 06, 2013 5:05 pm

Evening Guys

I want to save off some slurry from a fermented and settle beer in the FV, before I add finings - this was previously used to brew up at 5% ABV Porter.

I want to repitch that slurry into a 9% Double Stout.

How long does it last sealed in a fridge? Whats the best way of storing it - used sanitised mineral water bottles?

How many litres of (probably unwashed) slurry would I need for a 200L batch of high gravity wort?

Cheers
Alex

I'm not very scientific about it but I just empty the slurry into 2 glass coffee jars and put in fridge. I have used them up to about a month later. (I just throw in one of the jars into a new batch) They are likely good for longer than a month but I decide not too. On brew day, I take out of fridge, pour off the liquid and allow to get to room temperature.

I usually try to skim the lighter coloured slurry from the top, where I can, and keep it in a jar in the fridge. Again, only for about a month or so, as viability drops off too much.

Use Mr Malty Yeast Pitching Rate Calculator for the amount. [Set preferences to litres.]

You'd need about a litre of fresh slurry for 200L @ ~9%.
