Advice needed on oat malt

Post by Morten » Sat Aug 24, 2013 4:35 pm

Hi all,
I will get a sack of Fawcett oat malt.

I really want to brew a super smooth, creamy, oat meal stout but I have never used malted oats before.

But how much can/should I use?

Beersmith says max 10%, but that seems a bit low to me.
But what do I know :D

This one will be right up seymours street. Off the top of my head I seem to remember him saying around100g-150g for a 18ltr batch.

No, that's what he suggests adding to any recipe to improve the mouthfeel and that's unmalted oats. I don't think he'd suggest that for an oatmeal stout.

Aleman is your guy for oatmeal stouts as I know he's spent a lot of time perfecting his recipe. He gave my brother some pointers when he was creating one. His was 10% oats but unmalted flaked oats.

From a quick google apparently there are examples having up to 30% oats. Above which it says it gives an astringent flavour and bitterness. You can thank Brad Smith of Beersmith fame for that snippet of info.

Yep that what he suggested for me to improve the texture from a one can kit and it was porridge oats not a specialist malt

Cheers, I'll see if I can find some information from Aleman.

I am looking into making a gluten free beer and one suggestion is a 100% oat malt beer. If you do get a 25Kg bag you could try this.

Check out Old British Beers by John Harrison and Durden Park Beer Circle - recipe 102 Oatmalt stout it says 2lbs 5oz oatmalt 6oz pale malt 3oz Amber malt 4oz Dark Caramel 2 oz white suger and 0.9oz Fuggles per imperial gallon. I have never tried it, but it might even "out-Oat" Seymour ?
