Returning to the fold, need to nuke my kit clean

Post by Matt » Sun Sep 08, 2013 8:41 pm

Hi,

After a four year hiatus, I'm dusting off my AG brewing kit! I've got a decent batch of hops to harvest this year (Pilgrim) and a big itch to fire up the bv.

I want to start with a Mild to have something ready soon - good for morale - so I've got SiHoltye's Chugging Dark Mild slated. Hello Si!

BUT, just before I gave up I had a string of infections that appeared in the bottle/corny, so I'm nervous about getting my kit clean for a decent kick off. I can't see a reason to ditch any of it, I think it just needs a thorough going over.

Any advice please on deep cleaning practise?

Cheers,

Matt

I'd say buy a new fermenter. The chaplewood ones on amazon are pretty cheap.

Yes, good point. I need some new buckets. Although I'm hoping to employ a hardly used nice FV which is just a bit dusty. Hoping not to have to ditch that.

Hi Matt
Welcome back
PBW to clean, then Starsan to sanitize.

Just buy a new FV. If you had a string of infections before assume the worst. For the sake of £15 just buy another, it isn't worth ruining a batch of beer which cost £15 to make (not including time) for the sake of a £15 fv.

Forget bleach, its a waste of time. The contact time is too long for what we need and it needs rinsing. PBW + Starsan or oxyclean + starsan (or other good no rinse formula) and you should be set.

Welcome back Matt :D
Can I ask the knowledgeable whilst we are on the subject, can we use PBW or VWP - then go straight in with the starsan without rinsing the PBW ?
its corner cutting I know & probably not worth it ?

You really need to rinse PBW and VWP.

Hot water with a campden tab in it works perfectly for this purpose.
