Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
Hi,
I am planning on a Hoegaarden type clone and I have found a recipe which calls for these ingredients:-
2.0 kg. flaked wheat (1 °L)
2.2 kg Pilsner malt (1.6 °L)
0.5 kg flaked oats (1 °L)
113 g Munich malt (8 °L)
227 g Rice hulls or other natural filter
28 g of Hallertau hops, 60 mins (4% alpha acids)
43 g fresh citrus zest (5 mins)
11 g crushed coriander seed (5 mins)
1 g dried chamomile flowers (5 mins)
Wyeast 3944 (Belgian Witbier), White Labs WLP400 (Belgian Wit Ale) or Brewferm Blanche dried yeast
Can anyone advise if I can use torrified wheat instead of flaked wheat, and also quaker style porridge oats instead of flaked oats?
Regards

Flaked wheat/oats you can get in health food shops.I wouldn't used TW.It wouldn't be a Hoegaarden clone.TW and flaked wheat taste different and give you a different texture to the beer.
Re: Odp: Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
Best would be raw wheat, but flakes give very similar flavour effect.

I plan a hoegaarden beer this weekend, but i have ordered torrified wheat, so i guess i'll be going to the health food shop tomorrow.
I'm sure i read online they were the same. isn't flaked wheat difficult to get now?

I made a wit with Torri and it was great. Brupacks malt guide recommends it specifically for this style. Not sure if it's exactly what Hoegaarden use but it tasted pretty close to me.

Re: Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
Oh yeah I chucked the boiled whole orange 'shells' from the boil into the FV as well. Too much orange? We'll see!!!
Re: Odp: Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
Even 130 gms fresh orange peel wasn't too much for 21 ltr. That's from 7-8 oranges.

Re: Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
Okay Torri was okay, but what type of oats did you use?
Re: Hoegaarden/Witbier Ingredients Query??
I used about 10% oats in the one I did. Just cheap supermarket porridge oats.
