Cloudy wort

Post by simpleton » Sun Oct 06, 2013 9:29 am

Morning all,

Yesterday I mashed a simple IPA with 6KG of Maris Otter. When I came to drain the mash, I did the normal recirculation but the mash would not clear at all, it was really cloudy. There were no grain particles in it. I recirculated about 10 litres, nothing cleared, so I gave up and drained.

The numbers were all spot on but the resulting wort looks like ditch water. I couldn't boil yesterday, so I left it overnight in the kettle, and today have started the boil. It would appear its got significant amounts of cloudy, flour like material floating about in the wort.

Is this a problem? The bag of grain didn't seem abnormal, though I did notice the mash seemed a lot looser than usual when I was stirring it.

Anyone know what could have caused this and will irish moss clear it up at the end of the boil?

The wort really is pretty ugly, it kinda looks like a badly made cup of tea. Sorta a cuppa made with ditch water

Cheers,
Si

Don't worry about it too much. When I use BIAB to make the wort it always comes out cloudy before and during the boil. At the end of the boil it usually clears and once fermented and conditioned I always have very clear beer.

Same here, I get this from my home crushed malt as opposed to shop bought, I think it is because my malt is more floury. Yes, it often looks like ditch water. Don't worry about it, the beer usually settles out ok and clears up even if it takes a bit longer.
