Crip Maltings
Crip Maltings
Hello All
Any opinions on the various malts from Crisp Maltings? Never bought them before, but have heard good things. I usually use regular Warminster MO pale malt as my base malt for IPAs, Rubys and darker beers and particularly like it for a single malt dry IPA.
Crisp though do two interesting options:
Finest Maris Otter Ale Malt
Best Pale Ale Malt (which they describe as two row)
Any thoughts or comparisons from using these?

I've used MO from both and couldn't honestly distinguish between the two. Both give a good yield.hophit wrote:Hello All

Thanks Dave - good to know the MO is as good from Crisp as Warminster. I was thinknig more about the comparison between the two Crisp Maltings options rather than Warminster versus Crisp - any thoughts on that?

Use Crisp Pale Malt now all the time. Never noticed any drop in efficiency and for £22.50/sack from the MM, its a no-brainer. For me anyway

I've been using Crisp Pale Malt for quite a while now, ever since MM started stocking it. I find it excellent and use it as a base for everything, even Lager.
I have just bought my first sack of Crisp MO, just for a comparison. My first brew with it showed a big drop in efficiency, but I did have some Mash Temperature issues so it was probably not the fault of the Malt. I haven't tasted it yet though so can't provide any real comparison between the two.

Do you find the Crisp Pale paler than MO? I wouldn't mind finding something a little paler for blond ales. EDIT: Nah, I see from the EBC's on MM that the pale is slightly darker than the MO. I guess it would have to be the Lager Malt for Blonds.

I live down the road from both Crisp Maltings at Great Ryburgh and Branscombe Farm that grows it. I now get mine from Branscombe as they will supply it at nearly half what Crisp said they would supply me at direct
. I got a malt analysis with my last purchase and I think it might have suffered a little from last years horrendous weather so have experienced a little issue with yield, but I pay very little so just add a bit more grain and in the end the flavour is more than compensation for that.

It's fantastic stuff, I've used it for every all grain I've ever done. Admittedly that's not many however I get over 80% efficiency with it

I live a little further away from Crisp than Orlando does (not much though) and find it ironic that it's cheaper for me to buy it from the Malt Miller!
However it's good stuff and don't worry about the Lager malt, it's the same grain as the pale, just not cooked as much!

I've been using Crisp "Flagon" malt by the 25Kg sack load for about 2 years now. Good base malt, no complaints. I actually got better efficiency with it than the MO I was previously brainwashed into thinking was better.
My last purchase from MM was MO, however, due to the fact that I needed a 25Kg sack and he had no Flagon in stock

I've been weened onto Crisps for homebrew rather than the shitty bairds we use at work, Crisps get some good praise from lots of breweries, as do Simpsons.

I use Crisp pale malt and find no difference in taste or efficiency than when I was using MO.
