Hi,
when is the best time to add finings, & what finings are best ?
I am fermenting in FV for 2 weeks, then into bottling bucket - then straight into bottles.
Thanks

A few days ago I used gelatine for the first time and it's really impressive. Bottled beer is totally clear and only a little bit of sediment
Cheers and gone,

I've always added gelatine to the bottling bucket but I've seen lots recently about adding it to the FV 2-3 days before bottling/kegging.

gelatine in bottling bucket for me too. Just don't look at it for the first 5 or 6 days as it is conditioning, looks nasty.

I rack to another FV after fermentation has finished and then fine with Kwik Clear, which is kieselsol and gelatin (you add them half an hour apart).
I then rack again into to my bottling bucket leaving the crud behind.
Seems to work OK for me.

My way.............
Chill to 1C and add Murphy's Cellabrite (auxiliary fining's)
http://www.murphyhomebrew.com/finings/c ... od_29.html .
I find it drops seriously bright in a day or two, including taking most, if not all the the chill haze out. Really really impressed with this product

I use one sachet of Dr Oetker gelatine for five gallons. Available from Tesco.
Mix it into 3/4 pint of very warm water and let it stand until cooled.
I use a secondary fermentation , and after all signs of activity have ceased , I wait about three days for the heavy to settle and then gently stir the gelatine into the brew. Then I wait another two or three days before barrelling or bottling.
I read someplace that you should not use isinglass finings if you intend to bottle your beer, as isinglass makes the yeast sediment loose and fluffy.
Isinglass is fine if used in a barrel and the barrel is not going to be moved about.
Gelatine works fine in bottled and barrelled beers for me.
Cheers All

Had a quick squint through my books and found an entry that said not to use isinglass with bottom fermenting yeasts, apparently its not very effective.
Most of the time my brews clear well enough in the secondary fermenter without the need for finings.
The ones that I always have to fine are anything with Windsor yeast in . I have stopped using Windsor yeast for that reason.
A couple of times I have gelatine fined a Windsor yeast brew in the secondary fermenter and then again when barrelling, it does clear eventually.
Does anyone know if there are any downsides to using gelatine twice in the one brew?
I have not noticed any difference.
Cheers All.
