3 stage batch sparges
For my next brew, (hopefully next weekend) I'm planning to increase from 23 to 28 litres. I think my 40 l boiler should just about handle it, but I'm not sure about my mash tun, as I batch sparge. Sooo I am thinking about doing a 3 stage batch - 3 equal lots of about 12 litres. Can anyone see any problems/down sides to doing this?
Best wishes
Dave

That's what I thought, can't think of any obvious reasons why not. Thanks Rick.Rick_UK wrote:Should be fine as far as I can see.

Sounds OK to me - I would keep an eye on the gravity and stop if/when it reaches 1005 *

Three stages is fine. I've done it a few times. It's just a bit more faff and time than two stages.

Yes, especially for me as my boiler is also my HLT, which means I run the first batch into my FV, then after I've topped up the MT with the 2nd I tip the contents of the FV into the boiler ready for the boil. Three stage means I'll have to do 2 runnings into the FV making it a deal heavier to lift and pour into the boiler. Might have to employ a second vessel to split the load.boingy wrote:Three stages is fine. I've done it a few times. It's just a bit more faff and time than two stages.

It's a good point that, though it's probably something that needs to be considered even with 2 stage - and something I never bother checkingdaddies-beer-factory wrote:Sounds OK to me - I would keep an eye on the gravity and stop if/when it reaches 1005 *
