Is FG 1002 too low ?

Post by Mther » Fri Jun 27, 2014 6:16 pm

Hello guys,

I brewed an IPA recently and my FG reading was 1002. Is that too low? The OG was 1050.

I tasted the beer, it has no off flavors or aromas but it it a bit sweet with a bitter aftertaste. Is it possible to get that low FG?

I used the Wyeast 1098 smack pack.

Cheers

This happened to me and it was a wild yeast infection. Beer tasted ok but completely not to style.

The fact you say it tastes sweet yet is 1002 is EXACTLY same as mine.

Get bleaching your kit.

If it's a bit sweet it sounds like your hydrometer is off.

It is the plastic one from Coopers, I just googled it and it seems that many people have similar issues. I will try it in water and compare with the glass one, and will let you know.

You were right Matt, the coopers hydrometer was off, it was much below the 1000 in water and 1005 in beer while the glass one was showing 1012.

Glad you worked out what was wrong. It's a shame they're selling duff hygrometers.
