Quick Oats Question

Post by naturals » Sun Jul 20, 2014 9:47 am

So I'm about to brew a raspberry wheat beer from "The Homebrew Handbook". The recipe calls for 226g of flaked oats. Do I need to roast these before I add to the mash (as you would with an oatmeal stout) of just chuck them in? Unfortunately the book is great for recipes, not so good for instructions.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

A fruit beer probably wouldn't benefit from extra roast flavours. Don't just chuck them in, but mix them thoroughly amongst the malts prior to the mash that they might not clog up the works. They should provide a silky feel on the palate.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

The description from the Home brew shops says boil flaked oats for 30 mins before use. Not tried them myself yet

I use flaked oats in my Honorable Member mild and just mix them in with the grains in the mash tun.
I'm just here for the beer.

Thanks all - I ended up just lobbing them in the mash with the rest of my grain. Hopefully it'll taste as good as it smells right now!
