crushed pale malt - shelf life?

Post by chris172 » Mon Jul 28, 2014 2:41 pm

Got a couple 5kg bags of crushed pale malt which I have left over from the spring brew days and have had them stored in the attic for the last 4 months. went up there the other day and it was about 40c !!!! so it's been that pretty much all summer long.

They look ok but do you think they will be ok???

I usually order 2 sacks a year and have had no problem with shelf life. I do keep them in a cool dry box in the garage though. I would imagine they would be ok if no moisture has got in - try chewing a grain if it is sweet and crunchy it should be fine.

You should be fine. Back end of last summer I found myself with 3 sacks, the current brew made with the last of the second sack came out fine

Thanks for the advice..... it was just that it's been in the attic for the last few months where it's been about 40c and wasn't sure it would be any good.

Ive used plenty of old grain without problems.

The only one I chucked was a year old in a dodgy plastic bucket, and you could taste a musty/plasticy taste.

It's all about the taste. I had an old bag and my brother brought round a new bag. The taste different was instantly noticeable. I ditched the bag. I then found an unopened bag over a year old. Tasted that and it tasted fine. Have been using that for the past three brews.

Crushed Muntons (25kg sacks) come with 3months best before, but I think this is very pessimistic. I'm using 5 month old crushed malt and it's fine.
