Cooling

Post by Gandolf » Sun Sep 07, 2014 8:05 pm

Can I have some thoughts on cooling.

I have a 10mm coiled copper pipe that I use for cooling by placing it in the FV and straining my boiled wort slowly over the pipe. I tend to leave the boiled wort for about 15 mins to settle the hops before straining.
I have read that people cool in the boiler then strain.
Which is best or is there no difference.

I use a plate chiller but i'd say you are better off cooling inside your boiler. If you're pouring your hot wort over your coil, that could be introducing oxygen prematurely i.e. before it's cooled. Also, if you're putting your coil in your FV that is a possible source of infection.
