Fast sample cooling with a cocktail shaker

Post by byronb » Sat Jan 24, 2015 2:10 am

Got this tip from one of the BeerSmith podcasts and thought it might be useful for others.

To cool a sample quickly put it in a metal cocktail shaker and put that inside a bowl of water.

For a small sample to measure mash pH I cooled from 69C to 20C in ~15 seconds. A larger sample from the boil for a hydrometer reading doesn't take long either, especially if there's an ice block in the cooling water and the cocktail shaker cooled first.

Took less than a minute to cool a full trial jar from 82C to 19C for a hydrometer sample with an ice pack in the cooling water.
