British hops SMaSH - opinions please

Post by Hudders » Wed Apr 15, 2015 7:43 pm

Hello,

I intend to make three SMaSH beers by splitting the wort in three and boiling separately with three different hops. I am aiming for three different British hops that typify the style but are distinctly different from themselves. I will add the same quantity of each hop at copper up, 10mins from end and as dry hop. The recipe will give me a 4% ABV with IBU between 35 and 50.

What are people's thoughts on hops? I'm thinking Kent Golding for the fragrance, Bramling Cross for some current flavour and Challenger for some spice. The shortlist included Fuggles, Northdown and Boadicea.

Any suggestions? What would you do or have done?

Thanks

to suggest which one you shouldn't do might be too much personal preference, but get fuggles in there by any means neccessary!! :)
dazzled, doused in gin..

1. Bram X
2. Northdown
3. Goldings or Challenger, which are not dissimilar.

That would give you three good, different beers.

Having previously never brewed with any british hops *hangs head in shame* bar challenger Ive been on a bit of a British hop binge recently.

Challenger and EKG are my personal preferences but, that is entirely personal.

I do think that Challenger and EKG are in the same kind of taste spectrum though so if you want to really get different beers I would maybe just do one of the two.

I agree with DerbyshireNick

Challenger makes a great smash circa 4% its a nice crisp summer ale..
EKG too but will take a lil longer to mature.

I also rate fuggles for a smash but that needs a lil longer to mature and isnt very nice green, so expect to sit on that for about 2months before supping..

imho smash brewing is a great way to learn about hops and the flavours they impart.

happy smashing :)

Personally, I'd like to get my hands on some CF114 (AKA Bishop) - as I've heard some good things, especially that it has a strong honey aspect to the flavour profile which I'd love in a SMASH. Anyone know anything of this hop ?

EDIT : Research conducted by our very own Jimp2003 :) - that sounds like such a tasty brew !

Thanks for the posts all, interesting suggestions. So no calls for Boadicea?

Admiral and Challenger. Admiral gives a orange marmalade flavour, was very nice in the SMaSH I did.
