I have been grain brewing for a few years now and generally get pretty reliable results but suddenly my latest batch seems different:
I used my standard IPA recipe of Marris Otter, Munich 2 & Crystal along with the yeast recovered from the previous batch that was brewed with the identical recipe.
The first difference was in the fermentation vessel where the yeast went hyper active within a day and spilled a lot of crud over the top.
The second thing is that it brewed out at 1008 whereby it normally stops at around 1012!
I may be paranoid but there seems a slight difference in taste, not an off taste, just slightly different. Has anyone had a similar experience or know if this is a sign of something else in my yeast, like an infection (aaaarrggghhh!)

Re: Unusual Brewing Result?
sounds like an overpitch from the reused yeast. quick to start, massive krausen to spew, higher attenuation, different flavours, ticks all the boxes..
what's the different taste? i've had a cleaner beer than i was expecting (though still delicious) produced that way, but i've also had fusel-filled drainjuice when the cooling mechanism clearly wasn't strong enough..

dazzled, doused in gin..
Re: Unusual Brewing Result?
The final gravity is lower so maybe that would account for the slight difference in taste. Whenever I re-pitch yeast the second generation always performs slightly differently, I wouldn't worry about an infection as long as your process is fine.

Thanks jaroporter - I think your comment on an over-pitch of the yeast may be spot on. I remember now that I had a larger than normal amount of recovered yeast and I chucked the whole lot in! Thanks to all for some very sage advice.
