Hop poles and planning permission
Hop poles and planning permission
Hello all
I have just erected my biggest ever hop pole. Its in the back garden and effectively is a roofing baton extension to our pergola upright on the decking.
Its looking rather tall and quite a bit taller than last years....8.5 metres.... to give you an idea that is as tall as the apex on our two storey roof
Can a neighbour complain about it?
Does a pole need PP?
It cannot fall onto a neighbours property from where it is situated. And its only 2inches wide! Hardly offensive.
Anyone else ever done this?

Some neighbors can, and will, complain about everything.greenxpaddy wrote:Hello all

I doubt that you'd need PP approval, but the only way to know is to ask.
I'm just here for the beer.

Maybe go visit them, explain what it's for, and offering them a few bottles of the results might avoid any problems.
Re: Hop poles and planning permission
Well I've just checked- you don't need planning permission to erect a flag pole to fly the United Flag (it's only the Union Jack on a boat). And you don't need PP to erect a flag pole in your grounds unless you're in a controlled area. And sometimes wild hops do grow up the wire stays stabilising the flag pole

It's called the Union FlagBenB wrote:Well I've just checked- you don't need planning permission to erect a flag pole to fly the United Flag (it's only the Union Jack on a boat). Very true! I was being pedantic and incorrect- bad combo

Oooh. What a thiing to miss. I have anothe rhop plant in the garden so could have attached wires to the top of the pole and used that. Next year!IPA wrote:It's called the Union FlagBenB wrote:Well I've just checked- you don't need planning permission to erect a flag pole to fly the United Flag (it's only the Union Jack on a boat). I haven't had any successful hop harvests for the last two years. I've got a couple of Fuggles vines but last year they all just died off without even saying why they were going. We've also got lots of wild hops growing around the village and even they died off as well.
Re: Hop poles and planning permission
OT: It is correct to call it the Union Jack regardless of whether it is on a boat or not, and has been since at least 1908. See here. Union Flag is also fine.BenB wrote:Well I've just checked- you don't need planning permission to erect a flag pole to fly the United Flag (it's only the Union Jack on a boat).
