Alternative to Golden Promise Pale Ale Malt (Maltmiller)

Post by Donald » Wed Mar 16, 2016 8:28 pm

So, i was going to order some more All Grain kits from Maltmiller but they are out of Golden Promise Pale Ale Malt - which torpedoes lots of the pre-written recipes there.

Whats the best option for a replacement? the sheer number of recipies using this malt would say its the clear favorite..

Are you specifically looking at Scottish recipes? I know GP is often the favoured base malt there, where Maris Otter is much more common in English style ale recipes. I've used GP in place of MO on occasion and don't think my palate is really developed enough to note much difference, particularly when using speciality malts on top. So I would say MO or any UK pale base malt would work as a substitute.

Unless you have very little other grains and very few hops I don't think you will tell the difference between GP. MO or just plain pale malt (which could have a large proportion or even 100% of either of those or none).
