G30 compatible rolled plates now available

Post by f00b4r » Mon Jan 17, 2022 5:42 pm

For those Grainfather G30 owners that find installing the bottom part is a torturous process you may be able to recover your sanity… for a price.
Grainfather have released their G70/G40 style rolled plates upgrade for the G30 (AKA Connect). As it seems to be only the bottom plate that people have issues with installing, the thriftier among you might want to split the package of two with another person (it makes it a much nicer upgrade price).
I know at least one JBK user with one on the way, so hopefully we will get some decent feedback on its usefulness soon and if they intend to keep the second plate. It’s nice to see that Grainfather are still supporting users with their older hardware.

Guilty as charged, I'll post up a thread once I get the plates or maybe even a quick video of the things. Fingers crossed I might get a brew on this weekend.

I really only want the bottom plate as this is the one I have the most trouble getting into the malt tube (yes, I use all the hacks to make life easier with lube ;) ) The top plate has never been a major flaff to fit. I am hoping that the top and bottom plates are identical apart from the lugs on the top plate in which case the lugs should be easy to remove and the plate to be used as a bottom one, in which case it should be easy enough to sell on. IMHO GF would have been better to sell them individually to begin with, but at least as mentioned above they are still supporting the G30.

My G30 is also now resembling Triggers Broom :) Mods so far 1) Filter 2) Jacket 3) Controller 4) QD pipework 5) False bottom 6) Silicone Hoses 7) Grain Recirc basket 8) These new plates

So fairly numerous although to be fair the BMs normally have had a new filter, jacket, controller, tap, hood, hoist etc so the list goes on.

No idea what the new g40 / g70's are like and even if people are modding those or not / not likely to find out as I have so much invested in other equipment to suit my own personal preference.

The plates arrived safely today. First up I am surprised on the quality of the things, the quality IMHO is on par with BAC brewing equipment. The roll on the edge provides excellent rigidity and there is very very little flex. The diameter of the holes in the plate are the same as the original. The small spot welds for the lugs look better than than the GF advert, they are reasonably heavy 370g without lugs. Its a snug fit in the Malt Tube.

So first impressions are good, with care the lugs could be removed to make another bottom plate.

Yes the price isnt a good point but the quality is a good, its not some AliE elcheapo flimsy plate.

Don’t most people have issues with the silicon ring, as the malt pipe is not true? Be interesting to see if these fit properly with the same issues.

How far do the lugs on the top plate project ? , if not to far would that plate work at the base with the lugs downwards as long as they don't touch the base/element of the GF ? .

The lugs on the top plate are 35mm high with a width of 25mm, so with a approx over 50mm between the bottom of the MT & GF bottom it would be possible to use the TOP rolled plate upside down as a BOTTOM GF MT plate without any further alteration.

Only problem though thinking about it would be that the false bottom would then become unusable , one step forward two back  . Shame that's the case .

No reason to think the plate would become unstable its not like an Ali express or other FB piece of metal.

I did a very short video of me trying to flex the plate, I reasonably strong and there isnt much flex at all in the plate, the weight of any grain should keep the thing in place. In an ideal world if using a bottom plate the lugs should be removed but I see no reason why it couldnt be used upside down.

I wanted to see how easy it was to remove the lugs from the top plate so that it could be used as a bottom plate.

The answer is very easy, 6mm sharp metal drill bit, carefully drill the plug welds and tap off with a screw driver.

I did slightly catch the plate (only cosmetic) with the point of the drill on one side, the other is just a minor mark from the heat of the plug weld in manufacture.

Will no doubt sell the plate on as I only really need the one of them but in doing so reduces the overall price of the upgrade.
