Under carbed RIS bottles

Post by Monkhouse » Sun May 08, 2022 10:32 pm

Hey, I brewed an imperial stout which I left in primary for 4 weeks to ensure I got full attenuation. It finished nicely at 8.5% and I bottled the entire batch with one mangrove jacks carb drop per 500ml bottle (the carb drops are about 4g)
These are the drops I use for all my beers which I’ve never had an issue with. I bottle exclusively also I should add.
I put the bottles in the warmest rooM in my house which at this time of year with the heating off it around a constant 17c.
The yeast I pitched before fermentation was 2x S0-4 packs

My issue is after 2 weeks in the room at 17c I’ve now transferred to my cellar for cold(er) conditioning and I’ve tired 2 bottles tonight and they are hardly carbonated at all, zero head and pretty much zero sparkle.
Any ideas or suggestions? Is this something that may fix itself over time even in the cooler 14-15c temps of my cellar atm?

Have you tried a portable beer engine

suck up as much beer as you can, hold it a few mm above the top of the beer, and squirt it back in fast.

Hi,
17c is quite cool. 4 weeks primary is quite a long time.

I would warm them up and give them time. Think they will be OK.

Sounds like you could be at the upper limit for SO4

Monk,
Pour a pint of the flat beer, use the syringe as MadHippy says.
Hey presto, a lovely head on your beer! :D

Yes, but still no gas in the beer!! In fact, even less 'coz you've just smashed what little there was out of the beer and into the false head.

You know you said that outloud 😁.... And I really liked the word "smashed"

A better use of the syringe would be to use it to inoculate a shot of starter. And a zapcap would soon whizz the caps off.

So this is my solution… hopefully it will work as intended. I guess you could call it a bottle carbonation cabinet?
Temperature controlled using tube heater and inkbird, located in my cellar that rarely gets above 15- 19c even in mid summer.
So since I started this thread I moved the bottles up to the bedroom but even then I wasn’t getting a nice steady temp, I was getting 17.5, 18, 19.5, hence why I came up with this.

Hell if it doesn’t work I’ve got a nice proover for bread 😂

Could you also use that for primary fermentation?

No it’s not big enough to fit the fv inside, it’s just for the bottles
