It was really weird though as we both took pre boil gravity readings and they were both sat at 1.070 so we thought that the stronger brew (first runnings) had got really bad efficiency. Then the after the boil readings were completely different. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.
How much did you boil off? You will see your gravity go up considerably after you boil off some water so it makes sense your gravity went up post boil.

Also what was the temperature of the wort in the sample jar for both preboil and post boil? What temperature is the hydrometer calibrated too?

Nick did a 2 hour boil where as I stuck to a 1 hr, he did boil a fair bit off tbf probably around 6 litres. Hydrometers calibrated to 20c and pre boil wort was about 30c

Perplexing I'm wondering if there something going on with the preboil readings stratification maybe? You would have had to boil off a lot to hit the OGs you got with 1.070 preboil (like around 13 liters).

Yeah it took us both by surprise! Nick was gutted initially when he read the pre boil gravity and we couldn’t understand how the second runnings pre boil gravity was exactly the same lol
