A good rolling simmer

Had an interesting , and subsequently long ,brewday yesterday ( Mark Ollosons Montrose Ale ).

First the HLT tripped the electrics so when I strolled in to garage bleary eyed at 6am water was at 40c only. :roll:

Then during the boil the element kept switching off. Tried to remove cut off with it in situ to no avail. Ended up decanting near boiling wort in to my HLT and replaced element. Eventually finished before forgetting the molasses. :roll:

Now to the point of the post. A good rolling simmer was taking place, 100c was being achieved before element switched off and about 98c when it kicked back in. Would this have been sufficient if I hadn't had the luxury of a spare element :?:

Cheers daab - seems like I would have been ok if I had left it simmering then.

I had a good hot break before the problems and gave it another hour boil once I had transferred element so think I should be ok on this one ( its a very dark beer , best dirty looking trub left in the hops so far for me :D )

There are several breweries that actually simmer the wort rather than boiling hard Plzen, Gambrinus, Eldridge Pope Are a few that come to mind.

Plzen simmer for 3 hours for instance

ALEMAN is spot on there are,a few brewers who simmer for longer periods,i think the idea is it produces a softer bitterness,
I have my self had to boil at a gentle simmer once when i forgot to get more propane!so the burner was running on a very low cylinder,beer turned out no problems
