London Brewers: next LAB meeting on Monday 5th of January

Post by edit1now » Sat Jan 03, 2009 11:31 am

Hi All

We're meeting again at 6.30pm this Monday, 5th of January at the Wenlock Arms, 6 Wenlock Road, London, N1 7TA.

Do come along - all new faces will be welcomed.

I'm down to do a (rant) talk about my brewing equipment, with (engravings) illustrations.

SpearmintWino's LAB page here.

Come to the meeting. The people who weren't at the Sutton homebrew festival would love to meet you, Mr Prizewinner!

Bring some beer...

Cheers for the link to this, edit1now!

I'd love to come along but don't get out of work until 7pm so wouldn't make Old street till 8pm. D'oh! I'll no doubt entirely miss edit1now's talk by then. Is anyone likely to still be there at that time?

I'll phone in to work and see if I can do an emergency 'normal' shift instead.

By 8 pm we should have got onto testing the homebrewed beers we brought - last time (German beer chat November) I was still rabbitting at 8.

Ok great!

I'll see what I can do about leaving work a bit early, although it's a bit short notice so may not be possible if there's no-one to cover.

I'm a bit reluctant to bring along any brew being that I'm a beginner and still on kits, (although not for long) but I suppose it would be good to know in which particular way they taste funny, and why. As long as no-one minds!

I'm generally the class idiot when it come to bringing beers to try - I don't think any homebrew I've brought has ever met with general approval :( . We have got about three official beer judges amongst the membership. If you think there's something wrong with one of your brews, they will know what the fault is :D

Right then! I'll bring a couple of bottles of home brew and HWMBO along. See you there.

I can't make mondays any more SWMBO does pilates or some strange thing on mondays now.

Which is a shame really enjoyed the few I went to. 8)

I can't really complain as my Christmas present was an IOU for £150 or brewing stuff. :D

The meet went very well with some new members turning up including a brewster (we now have two :D). Edit1now gave a fascinating talk with pics on his Herms redirculation mashing system while another member kindly brought in a sample from a flavour faults recognition kit - we now all know what wild yeast contamination tastes like. :out
As far as beers go amongst others we sampled a great light (at 7% in colour only!) mild, a nice standard strength dark mild, 2 great examples of Durden Parks resurrected Whitbread Porter, a strange clovey dark beer made with Safales T58 yeast, a superb fruity IPA, a 'work in progress' Porter and Wheat beer that suffered from oxidation, an over hopped Cascade bomb Golden Ale  and a bitter that was so skunked that one member wanted to call International Rentokill as soon as the bottle was opened
Cant for the life of me remember what was on in the downstairs bar !
As usual a lot was learnt and a good time was had by all - try and make it next time (Monday 2nd Feb) if you can.

That was fascinating, thanks for telling me about this!

I missed the talks completely, unavoidably, but made the tastings, and learned a vast amount about how to insult beer

I'll definitely be along again, I'll see what I can do about earlier shifts on those days.

My descriptions of the beers listed above were: the belgian beer, the farty beer, the amazing porter, the cough mixture beer, the sherbert beer and the smelly beer.
Most of which were absolutely excellent! :D
