Glasgow - Base Malt Trial - Sunday 20th November
The Scottish Craft Brewers are going to be sampling/tasting and analysing the fruit of our Base Malt Trial in Sunday 20th November at Blackfriars in Glasgow. Meeting will be in the basement at Blackfriars and will start at 11:30am.
Five of our members have been given the same recipe to brew with the only difference being the Base Malt (90% of the grain will be either Pale Malt, Lager Malt, Munich Malt, Vienna Malt or Mild Ale Malt). The idea is to determine the difference that these malts bring when used as a Base Malt.
Along with this we encourage members to bring along there own beer for sampling/swapping.
Blackfriars have a good selection of cask beers and bottled beer from around the world as well as doing very good bar food.
If you want to know anymore then just give me a shout.

Sounds good! Will definitely come along. I have wondered about base malts for a while, will be very interesting!

I am also interested to see how this one turns out. I have some preconceived thoughts on it so it will good to see what the actual differences are.Zephiacus wrote:Sounds good! Will definitely come along. I have wondered about base malts for a while, will be very interesting!

Definitely worth joining mate, even if just to come to the monthly meetings, you can learn a lot from just being around other brewers!

Sounds like an interesting trial, Hope its a fun day too.
You should do a trial mash of each of the major suppliers Base Pale Malt too... see who is under-performing.

Just come along and see what you think. The more people get enthused and involved in these types of events then the more we all learn.graemet wrote:Ive considered joining the craft brewers to learn more in person. This seems a very good excuse to join.

Hi, I'm not a member of Scottish Craft Brewers , are all welcome?

Yes, all are welcome. The idea is that if people enjoy these types of events that they will join up for more of the same.

Was there ever any result or output from this meeting? Would love to hear what the verdict was on what the different base malts gave the beer....
