Apparently one of the banks wanted to shaft them. Looks more positive now, looking at this story.

Sounds like a bit of a nasty trick on the banks part! Good stuff, we still haven't got round to trying the Bistro

My mate goes all the time and says the food is excellent, still never managed to get there myself though.

Categories are according to the website pdf.
- 1. Light Ale / Bitter Up to 1.040 (Light to golden in colour, lightly
hopped, clean, dry and refreshing with no predominant flavour.)
- 2. Pale Ale / Best Bitter. 1041 -1050. (Golden to deep copper in
colour. Hops in the bouquet leading to malt and grain. Full bodied, malty and
grainy with a hoppy bitter farewell. Perhaps with a little residual sweetness.)
- 3. Strong Ale. 1051 and over (The bouquet should be malty and fruity,
backed with a good hop aroma. A full bodied blend of malt, hops and
alcohol and some residual sweetness.)
- 4. Strong Dark Beers. 1050 and over. Any dark beer. Please specify style
on entry form.
- 5. Dry Stout. 1045-1060. (The bouquet and flavour of roasted grains.
Full and dry with a long hard bitter finish.)
- 6. India Pale Ale. 1050-1075. (Hoppy, alcoholic and grainy bouquet
Full bodied, malty and grainy with a prominent hop and a clean bitter
farewell. Some residual sweetness to balance the hop.)
- 7. Speciality Beers. Any beer not mentioned above. E.g.: lager, wheat,
barley wine, fruit, Belgian mild etc. Please specify style on entry form
- 8. Inter-Regional Competition: Pale Ale 1050-1060. Only one by
six bottle entry from each region. No fee required.
Where does an APA or Hoppy Pale fit into this? Being that an IPA in its Authentic form isn't an American or New Zealand hopped beer.

Those are pretty much the categories that have been used in past nationals and it hasn't stopped people entering those sorts of beers in the past. I agree I would like more of a world-view to the categories but it's not my festival so I can't really complain. Personally I plan on entering a US style IPA in that category.

How can you judge a lager against a wit?

I got a reply from Graham Kingham about this.
must be an English style, you could use other hops...................you could try the American but it is really in a different class................ I once entered a bitter that had a lot of flaked barley in..............it was marked down as being out of style.....a bit astringent, so to maximise your chances, stick to the English one.
kind regards
Graham

hiya,
is there any further clarification what can be entered into each category?
6. India Pale Ale. 1050-1075. (Hoppy, alcoholic and grainy bouquet
Full bodied, malty and grainy with a prominent hop and a clean bitter
farewell. Some residual sweetness to balance the hop.)
Does this have to be a classic English ale with Goldings/ Fuggles or can this also be an American Hoppy Pale?
cheers
On another note, 6 bottles per entry... if you enter a few categories thats a shed load of beer!!

It didn't strike me as a lot as there's more than just the judges who want to taste the beers. If you're carrying them or posting them then it is a lot of weight. I'm driving and will drop them off on the Friday afternoon. Should be OK (fingers crossed).
As to the styles - I'm brewing what I want. If they like they like it and if they don't they don't.
