Lockdown Brew Day
Lockdown Brew Day
Hi all, its been a few years since I did any brewing & I decided to do a "Lockdown Brew Day" based on the ingredients I had laying around the house. I steeped the malt & the flaked maize for 30 mins in 70 degree water & added the malt extract & golden syrup, decided to wait an extra day to see if I could buy more malt extract from the supermarket but unfortunately they didnt have any so had to go with what I had below.
GRAINBILL
680 g Golden Malt Extract
1000 g Golden Syrup
544 g CaraPils
1000 g Flaked Maize
HOPS
First wort addition
15 g = .03 oz Saaz
15 g = .03 oz H. Hersbrucker
Flame-out addition
25 g = .06 oz Saaz
25 g = .06 oz H. Hersbrucker
Pre-boil volume
Liquid in & ready to start boiling
Hops weighed out & ready to go in at start & end of boil
It took about 30 mins to get to the boil from cold
Immersion chiller in to sterilise & start cooling, got down to about 40 degrees & the hose came off the chiller so had to abandon cooling & let the beer cool over night
Hops draining Cooling
Wort run off into 3 gallon FV & only got just short of 2 gallons but it was just a left over brew so no big deal
Got a yeast starter from 2 bottles of "Proper Job" beer all ready to add to the brew as soon as its cooled to a decent temperature, looks like the OG was about 1036 so it wont be the strongest beer in the world but it will get supped regardless.
Cheers DC

Hey Leedsbrew, long time no speak mate, nice to see your still on Jims, yeah it was a bit of a practice run if I am honest just to get my Brewing Eye back in after 2 years off. It was great to use "Old Faithful" (my original all grain brewing kit) instead of the Big Boys stainless Kit I have moved on to now, maybe next time I can get a proper batch on if I can get some malt delivered.

Aye, crawling back out the woodwork. Been meaning to for a while, but work, kids, etc etc getting in the way. Seemed like an opportune time when all the beer disappeared off the shelves!DC wrote:Hey Leedsbrew, long time no speak mate, nice to see your still on Jims, yeah it was a bit of a practice run if I am honest just to get my Brewing Eye back in after 2 years off. I ordered a bulk of malt from MM just before they had to start limiting orders for malt. I think they take malt orders at about 3pm every day, but spaces are limited.

Good to see you back. You were around before I even started and I'm definitely an old lag now, in more ways than one.
Looks like the band is getting back together then?

Hey all, well its been a week since i pitched my yeast starter & the brew is going great guns. Certainly smells like a Belgian Beer with all that Golden Syrup as Seymour said it would.

Re: Lockdown Brew Day
Hey all, finally decided to bottle my "Lockdown" Brew yesterday after almost 2 weeks of fermenting it stopped at around 1006 to 1008 so hopefully around 3.6 to 3.9% . Added Half Sugar instead of normal white sugar for priming so not sure what the end result will come out like? Either way it will still get s'upped
Bottling under way
The left overs in the FV
Only got around 7.5 litres
Cheers DC

Re: Lockdown Brew Day
Hello! Some familiar names there, I'm back too. First brew in nearly three years, disaster. Even forgot to mill my malt, luckily not much went in the mash!
Another go tomorrow
merry fermentations!
