Wheeler suggests 55g for a half pint starter - and that has worked for me in the past - so I guess for 500 ml starter if you doubled it you would be in the right ballpark.

aren't you aiming for 1040 gravity?

Well final gravity is less of an issue for a starter... ;) If anything from the yeast's point of view more is more... :D

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ May 24 2006, 08:11 AM) I dont belive thats strictly correct Reg, it shouldnt be too rich.
Such is the price of sweeping generalisations... :D I wasn't suggesting dumping a 500g bag in a glass of water! ;)

I guess my point was that the SG of a starter is reasonably unimportant as long as the wort is meaty enough to get a good culture going. Aiming for theoretical SG perfection is a waste of time, near enough will do. :P

I work off 1g per 10ml which I believe gives 1.030-1.040. Its easy to remember too.

Fairy snuff.

I will persist in not getting my hydrometer out whilst making a starter though... :P

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ May 24 2006, 11:31 AM) I've never used a hydro for a starter either as I now know what works, besides you've now got a choice of Metric and English units to measure out your starter thanks to tribs there ;)
I will of course favour the English... :D

I'm all for metric personally.

For example, I love a good 0.5682 litres of beer :D
