Barrel transfer question

Hi everyone,

I have just transferred my fixby gold to my king keg via my newly fitted tap and some tubing. Just had a few questions that I wondered if anybody could help me with:

1. the diameter of the tap opening is 18mm and I got hold of a length of 18mm tubing to put over the top of it. When I started to empty the beer down into the barrel it was flowing very fast (the keg was full after only 20 seconds or so). Would the speed of this affect the quality? i.e. would oxygen have been introduced? I'm thinking that the tubing was under the beer in a matter of seconds and it certainly wasn't sloshing around as it filled so I don't see how oxygen could be introduced via the fast running beer but I just wanted to check. A few bubbles raised into the bottom of the fermenting vessel as I gently tipped it to get the last through the tap and at that point i immediately stopped the tap as I was worried I had oxygenated the beer in the fermenter.

2. I had most of the beer added to the barrel when I then added the primer sugar solution, which was close to boiling. I assume this wouldn't have killed all the yeast as it was hot? It would have cooled down to the beer temp in a matter of a second as it was only 100mls or so.


Phew sorry for the ranting questions, I have attached a picture of my full king keg complete with beer label, for no other reason than I am proud of my effort so far, so excuse my indulgence :)

Thanks for the reply DaaB!

My tubing is a 18mm as I couldint find any 16mm in any store around here. I just clamp it onto the tap with one of those hose tightener ring things that you screw to tighten. I love the idea of using a smaller size of tubing like that, I will definitely look into doing that.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest. I have all my ingredients ready for my next brew (including a second barrel) but I will hold off making that one until I am sure my fixby has turned out ok in case I need to re-evaluate my methods. I did have a taste of the small amount left at the bottom of the fermenting bin and it tastes lovely with no apparent signs of infection and no homebrew "twang" that I have always associated with the hobby.
