Advice - using Bruheat boiler for the first time -

Post by leigh1919 » Thu Oct 09, 2008 7:23 pm

Evening Lads -

Got my shiny new Bruheat boiler in the post this week. Very happy, can't wait to get started.

Just got a couple of newbie - type questions, trying to get things right in my head.

1. Looking at the excellent 'Technique' pages on here, am I right to understand that the LME i was going to use goes directly into the boiler - do i need to pay attention whilst stirring to avoid the heating element?

Told you it was a daft one. But I'm trying to plug ALL the gaps in my knowledge.

Anyway - due to the taps in my kitchen, I can't use a copper cooler. What I do have, however, is a large steel bin. In order to cool before pitching, I was going to transfer the wort into a FB and place that in the bin, filled with cold water. the FB would be sanitised, of course, and im doing this because I can't submerge the Bruheat.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this setup?

Thanks -

Before buying a cooler I use to put the FV into a cold bath

ah, the mixer tap woudl be a bugger to get onto a coil is all.

I've seen a number of post with people putting the FV in baths and even leaving overnight- i guess that'll be my way initally....no worries!

What about the proteins in the hot break? Once the boiling is done, I was going to transfer the wort into an FV. Should I wait until cooled before siphoning, in order to leave the hot break/proteins behind in the boiler? I hadnt even thought about that!

You need one of these, or maybe this one but it's more expensive.
