I've got a bad back so seriously need to minimize any heavy lifting. I wonder whether the way to go is to get a 10 gallon boiler with double elements, a 33l boiler with a single element as my HLT and a mash tun of some sort. That way I won't have to lift too many things around. It may cost me a bit more but at least it won't snap my back in two. Is there any way to avoid having to lift the FV from the bottom of a 3 tier system to it's final position for fermenting or is that just the way it goes?

You can always use a pump, it is probably my next purchase.

I covered that here viewtopic.php?p=207051#p207051 I also have a back problem and although I now have a pump I managed without one in the way described for many years, it works with any size brew length.
Thanks for the advice - didn't mean to double post. How do you then transfer the wort to your final fv if its on a crate on the floor? Do you start with a three tier system for sparging - HLT, then mash, then spare FV. Lift the half full FV onto the top tier and fill with the 5l jug, leaving the boiler on the middle tier and then your final FV on the bottom.

Then you've just got to move the FV to it's final fermenting position? It's like a logic puzzle!
