recipie using goldings

Post by sam c » Tue Mar 24, 2009 5:55 pm

i was gonna get some goldings and add a few to a geordie yorkshire bitter kit along with some dme and thought i might give extract brewing a go with the left over hops. i was wondering if anyone could suggest a recipie for a pale ale using the left over hops ( about 70g worth)? a nice refreshing, easy drinking pale ale would be perfect. any suggestions chaps?.....

What % alpha acid are they? By easy drinking do you want one that is not that bitter but with a good deal of aroma?

i would like a beer that goes down easy and is not too strong.say around 4%. yer i think less on the bitter side and more on the aroma.

sorry forgot to say alpha acid is 4.5% - 5.5% from my HBS

How about

3.5kg Pale malt extract to 1.046 for 23l

40g Goldings 90min
10g Goldings 15min
20g Goldings steep 70-80C for 20-30minutes

Should give 25-30 IBUs depending on the alpha acid.
Probably be about 4.5% depending on final gravity. Keep back some of the late hops for dry hopping in the cask if you fancy trying that.

That should be nice a quaffable but I stand down if someone more experienced with extract wants to suggest something. I have only done full mash not extract.

Hope all goes well

that sound great, thanks very much. do you reckon i could use 3kg malt extract rather than 3.5? only because the cans come in 1.5kg. also is 10g late hops and 10g for dry hopping ok? cheers

Yes that would be fine, sorry I didn't realise that. In that case it would come out at around 4%. Late hops are just for flavouring, although you do get a small amount of bitterness from the 15 minute addition, so you can have as many or as little as you like. I have just done a brew with only bittering hops.

I'd be interested in what can be brewed with Spray malts and Hops alone...
This might make an interesting future experiment :)
